The Ghost Town 38.5 - Finisher's Medal

The '09 finisher's award is still in its early stages.  When I have a finished one to show you, no worries...I will.  'Til then - it's a surprise!

In the end, the finishers received royal blue fleece blankets that roll up and velcro into a nice little neck pillow shape.  The race logo, date, and "Finishers Award" were imprinted on the flap.  Photos will be posted shortly.

Well, I have designed three different finisher's medals.  Thing is: everywhere we turn we are bombarded by discussion of "going green."  Politicians are babbling on, there are ads on tv, magazines, even contests.  I know about the contests, because I recently entered one for athletes who are trying to raise environmental awareness.

There are days that I am overwhelmed with clutter - email clutter, IDs and passwords creating mental clutter, junk mail til I want to scream "enough already."  I've spent the better part of the month streamlining the studio to get rid of visual clutter so I could design and put together some artistic visual statements.

My personal response to "greenness" is to be less of a consumer.  I know that doesn't make retailers happy this time of year, but it seems even as athletes we accumulate too much "stuff."  We've got drawers full of race tee-shirts and all kinds of finisher's medals we don't know what to do with.  Mine either collect dust on the dresser or sit in a box on the dresser.  Either way, I recently looked at the box and thought, "I wore my medals for about half an hour after the race.  Okay, my first marathon medal I wore on the plane home, but otherwise, all others have grown dusty.

So, in keeping with my efforts to collect less clutter and be sensitive to the environment, I'm going to give my finishers something practical this year.  At least that's the plan today - it's Saturday and I can't confirm what I want to do until Monday.  I'm not prepared to tell you what you're getting, but I promise: it's something everyone can use.  When I've got a "for sure" I might put it on the website, but then again, I might just let the suspense build!

After all, 'tis the season for surprises!  Have a merry, merry!  susan
